After the first 90 days of car ownership, has that honeymoon afterglow worn off, or do you find your buying decision more vindicated than ever? That’s what the J.D. Power APEAL survey is here to find out. Using the criteria of engine/transmission; ride, handling and braking; comfort/convenience; seats; cockpit/instrument panel; heating, ventilation and cooling; sound system; and styling/exterior, the organization takes feedback from new owners after the first 90 days to see which cars are still worth their mettle.

Leading the way for the most overall category wins are the Volkswagen Group–which includes Porsche and Audi–and General Motors. Note that Volkswagen’s five winners aren’t all core models, and include the Porsche Boxster and Cayenne, and the Audi Allroad. Recently, the automaker purchased Porsche, which has two vehicles–the Boxster and Cayenne–on the list. Chevrolet, most specifically, had the most overall winners with three: The Volt, Avalanche, and Sonic subcompact.

J.D. Power says that the APEAL survey skews towards new models because the afterglow almost certainly hasn’t worn off 90 days after purchasing something only you have on your block. However, the company notes that the Acura ILX, Scion FR-S, Acura RDX, Subaru XV Crosstrek, and Subaru BRZ all fell below average. Other models like the Chevrolet Avalanche, Ford F-Series Super Duty, and Volkswagen GTI are nearing the end of their current generations. This year’s results are a little more scattered.
