Thread of the Day: Which Engines are Overhyped?
This forum topic comes courtesy of member Turtle-Power, who wants to know what engines are overhyped. He starts the flame war with Toyota’s 2JZ inline-six engines which powers the venerable fourth-gen Supra, claiming that common modifications spell doom for certain engine parts like head gaskets and pistons.
Coincidentally, the topic comes on the same day Chevy unveiled the new LT1 small-block V-8 of the upcoming C7 Corvette. As we’ve reported, the LT1 will produce 450 hp and sport an array of advanced technology – direct injection, variable valve timing, and Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) just to name a few. Still, some folks are left unimpressed with the Corvette’s new powerplant. “Ancient tech relying on displacement,” claims one member. Other heated discussions revolve around Dodge’s modern “HEMI” engines and why Honda continues to tout i-VTEC badges on its Civic.
