Thread of the Day: What Car Offers the Best Conventional Automatic Transmission?
There’s one 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 feature we aren’t likely to ever see on the current-generation Ford Shelby GT500: an available conventional six-speed automatic transmission. Though some enthusiasts may dislike the idea of an autobox in a performance car, sales of cars like the automatic-transmission ZL1 likely help justify production of cars like…the six-speed manual transmission ZL1. Today’s Thread of the Day is from Jaws, who asks what car offers the best conventional automatic transmission.
Though conventional automatic transmissions don’t offer the engagement level of a twin-clutch or manual transmission, sometimes — as with the ZL1 — they provide just as solid, if not better performance than alternatives. Chevrolet estimates the 2013 ZL1′s quarter-mile time at 11.93 seconds with the automatic and 11.96 seconds with the manual.
In the original thread, other suggestions included the Lexus IS F (eight-speed automatic) and cars that use the ZF eight-speed automatic, which could include vehicles like the 2013 Jaguar XF and 2013 Ram 1500. If you had to drive an automatic-equipped vehicle, tell us: What car offers the best conventional automatic transmission?
