2014 Chevrolet Spark EV –  high tech electric city car priced

For the 2014 model year, Chevrolet’s smallest U.S. vehicle will feature some mechanical changes. Instead of its current four-speed automatic, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark will offer a continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT). Other transmission choices will include a five-speed manual, and both the CVT and manual transmissions will be partnered with an 84 horsepower, 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine.

When combined with the five-speed manual, the current Spark has a combined fuel economy average of 34 mpg, which drops to 32 mpg when equipped with the automatic. Driven more thirty miles on a route that was two-thirds highway and one-third city, the 2013 Spark averaged 35.8 mpg. With the addition of the CVT, gas mileage should improve and provide a better driving experience.

Currently, General Motors does not have any vehicles equipped with a CVT, but has in the past with the Saturn Ion and Vue models. Other manufacturers like Subaru and Nissan use CVTs to increase fuel efficiency.

Looking at the 2014 Chevrolet Spark lineup, it’s interesting to note that the fastest model will be the Spark EV, with a lithium-ion battery pack to power the electric motor. It will develop 134 horsepower, or 100 kW at peak output, letting the car go from 0 to 60 in less than 8 seconds.
