Spied! 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, V-6, 1LE Prototypes
The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS and Z/28 have been officially revealed, but where does that leave the rest of the muscle car’s lineup? Before Chevrolet is ready to provide official photos, a group of 2014 Camaros have been caught, giving us a good idea of what to expect.
We’ll start with the 2014 Camaro 1LE prototype, which maintains the trim level’s blacked-out hood but adds the revised lower front fascia, hood vent, and slim grille we saw on the 2014 Camaro SS. The matte-black rear spoiler remains, and we expect the 1LE to continue using the SS’ 426-hp 6.2-liter V-8.
A 2014 Camaro ZL1 coupe and convertible were also caught, still wearing the pre-refresh front grille and lower front fascia. Chevrolet tells us this design will make it to the production 2014 Camaro ZL1; changing the front fascia would have required too much extra work to improve aerodynamics and potentially caused issues related to the packaging of its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. From behind, the ZL1 convertible prototype wears the 2014 Camaro’s new CHMSL light above the license plate area, but still uses another CHMSL light on the top of the trunk lid, just beyond the spoiler and shark-fin antenna.
If these 2014 Camaro prototypes are representative of the cars we’ll soon see in dealerships, the Camaro RS prototype is revealing, as well. Not surprisingly, the RS lacks the SS’ hood vent, and the fog light trim is much simpler than on the more powerful variants. The wheels appear to be the same bold five-spoke units we’ve seen before, and the car adds extra curb appeal with four exhaust outlets — the regular 2014 Camaro SS has a dual-exhaust setup.
