As the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV draws nearer to production, we’re slowly getting more and more details for the little electric car. Chevrolet’s first all-electric car–and the first all-electric vehicle GM has bestowed upon customers since the GM EV1 of the late 1990s–the 2014 Spark EV will have an electric driving range of 82 miles and has an mpg equivalent of 128 mpg city/109 mpg highway/119 mpg mixed, which GM says makes it the most efficient electric car yet.

As a result, the tiny car will be able to hit 60 mph from standstill in under 8 seconds. Its battery pack can hold 21 kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is three fewer than the Nissan Leaf’s. Yet, because of its small size, it out-distances the Leaf’s standard 75 miles; the Leaf beats the Spark EV in its extended-range mode, achieving 84 miles. By comparison, the Chevrolet Volt is rated at 35 miles of electric driving range from its 16 kilowatt-hour battery pack, but it’s also a far larger, heavier car, and it has an on-board generator under its hood.

Chevrolet says the 2014 Spark EV will go on sale for less than $25,000, including a $7,500 federal tax rebate, or a little more than $10,000 over the cost of an 82-horsepower gas-engine version with all the same options. Chevrolet’s EPA projections say the Spark EV will save owners $9,000 in fuel costs over five years, which makes the cars nearly evenly priced in the real world.

In any case, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark will be going on sale this summer in Oregon and California. If it proves popular and there’s demand for it, you might see one at a dealer near you after that.
