The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is opening an investigation to see if General Motors should recall 400,000 vehicles for defective airbags. This is in conjunction with previous recalls in October 2012 and January 2013, which addressed electrical connector defects in 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, Camaro, and Sonic models, as well as the Buick Verano.

From the two previous recalls, around 7,000 vehicles were recalled, but this new investigation will decide if the additional 400,000 should be recalled as well. “To identify the scope of each of the two recalls, GM stated it conducted an investigation of the root cause and an analysis of the warranty claim data, including a review of claim rates by air bag inflator build date. However, among other things, it appears that a production issue was not fully identified, particularly for the second recall,” commented the NHTSA.

GM is cooperating with the NHTSA to resolve this matter; however, it is not the only recall in which the automaker is involved. GM and IMPCO Technologies Inc. are recalling 1,800 2011 to 2013 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana Cargo vans that run on natural gas. These vehicles may have a defective part that opens and closes the CNG fuel flow, which could lead to fuel leaks and fire.

Dealers are set to replace the parts and secure the nuts for all exterior tanks. The existing gas fuel pump fuse will also be replaced for added safety measures. No crashes or injuries have been reported in relation to this recall, but one fire was reported with vehicle parts overheating and melting.
