2014 Mazda 6, 2013 Toyota Avalon Named Ward’s 10 Best Interiors
WardsAuto has released its 2013 rankings of the 10 best interiors. Seven of the top interiors came from Asian automakers, while the remaining three all came from General Motors and Chrysler.
Notably missing from this year’s list are any European automakers – last year, Audi, Land Rover, and Volkswagen all took home honors. However, this year, no one automaker took home more than one spot on the list. (Last year, Hyundai scored two of the 10 slots.)
“This year’s batch of winners really drives home the point that interiors are a vital part of the battle for consumers’ hearts and minds,” WardsAuto world Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter said in a statement. “It wasn’t uncommon all that long ago for auto makers to view interiors as the best place to take cost out of a vehicle. They eventually figured out that’s a big mistake, because people spend a lot more time looking at the inside of their car than the outside.”
The winning automakers this year were Acura, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Mazda, Nissan, Ram, and Toyota; base prices for the winning cars range from just $12,995 for the Chevrolet Spark up to $60,345 for the Lexus GS 450h, including destination on both cars.
WardsAuto‘s editors emphasized a cohesive blending of old and new technology, interesting design, and high durability in the 2013 picks. There was also a trend of notably more upmarket interiors that often belied the car’s price class. Attributes that popped out to Wards included the Spark’s cheery accents, the “straightforward and intuitive communication system [and] brilliant door trim resembling the layered gills of a shark” of the Kia Forte, the matte wood offered on the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn, and the “impeccable build quality” of the Toyota Avalon.
