2014 Chevrolet SS Priced From $44,470

Performance enthusiasts, get your checkbooks ready: the 2014 Chevrolet SS will cost $44,470, including a $995 destination charge, when it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. That price doesn’t include the car’s gas guzzler tax, however, which has yet to be calculated.

That price tag gives buyers a rear-wheel-drive sedan with a 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 engine, good for 415 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, and a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment for the 2014 Chevrolet SS includes LED running lights, the MyLink touchscreen infotainment system, a self-parking feature, dual-zone climate control, heated and cooled power front seats, push-button start, a backup camera, a color head-up display, and a Bose sound system.

There is only one trim level, and Chevrolet will offer just two options: a power sunroof for $900, and a full-size spare tire for $500. The five exterior color choices comprise Mystic Green, Silver Ice Metallic, Red Hot 2, Phantom Black Metallic, and Heron White. The only interior color scheme is Jet Black.

Thanks to the LS3 V-8, which is also used in the Camaro SS and outgoing Corvette, Chevrolet says the 2014 SS will hit 60 mph in about five seconds. To rein in all that power, the car comes with Brembo front disc brakes with 14-inch rotors and four-piston calipers. The standard 19-inch wheels are shod in Bridgestone performance tires. The 2014 Chevrolet SS is based on General Motors’ global “Zeta” platform, which also underpins several Australian Holden performance cars, as well as the Chevrolet Camaro.

Chevrolet hasn’t yet divulged fuel economy ratings for the 2014 SS, but the fact that the car will attract a gas guzzler penalty tax suggests that horsepower takes priority over green credentials. Cars that achieve less than 22.5 mpg in the EPA’s combined fuel-economy cycle are subject to the tax.

The price point puts the 2014 Chevrolet SS midway between two other GM performance cars. The 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS coupe, which has a version of the LS3 V-8 tuned for 426 hp, starts at $33,535 after a $900 destination charge. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, which has a 455-460-hp LT1 V-8, starts at $51,995, after destination.
