2014 Chevrolet Impala Production Starts
The lines at General Motors’ Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant are in motion today: the carmaker says that it’s produced the first 2014 Chevrolet Impala and will begin selling the new model this month.
It’s been almost one year to the day since we first saw the 2014 Impala, at the 2012 New York Auto Show, and the new model is now headed to dealers. The current-generation Impala will continue production at the Oshawa plant for one more year as the Impala Limited, and be sold to rental fleets across the country. Production of the 2014 Impala will also begin later this month at GM’s plant at Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan.
While the Impala Limited is a darling of fleets, the 2014 Impala hopes to shake the rental-counter stigma with a dramatic new look thanks to a wide trapezoidal grille and LED running lights. Under the hood there’s a selection of three engines–a 2.5-liter I-4 making 196 hp, a 2.4-liter I-4 mild hybrid making 182 hp, and a 3.6-liter V-6 making 305 hp–all mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
On the inside, there’s a slew of new technology, including available adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a rear-view camera with cross-traffic alert; the infotainment system is all-new, a next-generation version of Chevrolet’s MyLink system that uses an eight-inch color touch screen and voice activation with natural language recognition.
The 2014 Chevrolet Impala will start at $27,535 for the 2.5-liter and $30,760 for the 3.6-liter. General Motors says that the first models coming off of the Oshawa lines feature the 3.6-liter engine and will reach dealers later this month. Chevrolet will start making 2.5-liter models in Detroit later this month and ship to dealers by early May, and eventually both the American and Canadian plants will make both I-4 and V-6 models. The mild-hybrid eAssist model will start production in the fourth quarter of this year and reach dealers by the end of 2013, at a price to be determined.
